Adidas is a sports apparel company operating worldwide. The company was started in the 1920s by founder Adolf Dassler and his brother. However, in 1948 the brothers split and 'Adi' formed adidas. The company was officially registered in 1949. Adidas' breakthrough came when it supplied the winning German team with soccer cleats for the 1954 World Cup finals. In the 1960s adidas began manufacturing apparel as well as footwear. Upon Adi's death, his wife and son took charge of the company in 1978. But his son died unexpectedly in 1987 and the company became a corporation in 1989. After a series of owners, Herbert Hainer took charge and adidas purchased Reebok thereby greatly increasing their presence in the industry.
